Here at Forfar Road Gallery & Collectibles, we love things that are just a little bit different, unusual, cool, and so on. This offering is certainly no exception—the Fuji Rabbit Junior model S82k motor scooter.
Made by Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan, this 1965 vintage scooter is powered by a 125cc motor, which, although it doesn’t get you where you are going at great speed, certainly does get you where you are headed.
Spurred by a need to produce low-cost, fuel-efficient personal transport options post World War II, Fuji Heavy Industries produced the first model Rabbit in 1946. Looking not much more than a motorised box on wheels, the S-1 Fuji Rabbit became an immensely popular scooter. Later models introduced features and enhancements such as electric start, pneumatic suspension, and models capable of reaching speeds exceeding 60 mph, which revolutionised scooter transportation.
At a time when the company could foresee a greater future demand for four-wheel ‘automobiles’, the company produced its first version of a ‘car’ in 1958. Under the new brand of Subaru Motors, the first Subaru 360 started production.
Fuji Rabbit motor scooters were imported to New Zealand in the early 1960s and assembled by a Christchurch-based company, and were marketed as the S102 Victa motor scooter.
The last Fuji Rabbit scooter rolled off the Japanese production line in June 1968. Fuji Rabbit scooters, much like the Italian Vespa scooters, have a huge cult following, particularly in Japan, where regular events and gatherings draw large numbers of enthusiasts. There is a Fuji Rabbit Enthusiasts group established in New Zealand.
Certainly a rare and desirable scooter, the S82k Rabbit Junior offered for sale by Forfar Road Gallery & Collectibles is resplendent in its original paintwork of blue and yellow. It has travelled 14800 km and is in immaculate original physical condition. It is ready for the road, registered, and a new WoF will be offered on confirmation of sale.
